Part No. SU ADC8932 4388932 Adaptive Defrost Board for Whirlpool
Part purpose:
Board is a solid state defrost timer that adjusts frequency of the defrost schedule to adapt to the usage of freezer. Frost and ice build up faster in the freezer when the freezer is accessed more often. Opening the freezer door allows moist air to flow into the freezer. Moisture in the air will condense and freeze on the cold surfaces and must be removed by the defrost system. The defrost heater is an energy hog. The adaptive defrost board saves energy by running fewer defrost cycles during times the freezer door remains closed.
Part location on Refrigerator:
The adaptive defrost is usually found inside the refrigerator compartment near other refrigerator control components.
Part failure symptoms:
Food in freezer gets soft when freezer temperature cannot be maintained. Defrost problems are the most common malfunction of refrigerators. Defrost problem can be confirmed by removing food from freezer and removing the freezer interior panels that cover the cooling coils. A defrost problem is confirmed if the cooling coils are covered with ice. Using a hair dryer to defrost the ice will restore the freezer to normal operation. Normal operation will continue for about three days when the coils are again covered in ice
Part diagnosis:
The adaptive defrost board is determined to be bad by process of elimination. The defrost system consists of three components; 1. The adaptive defrost board, 2. The defrost heater, 3. The defrost termination switch. If the defrost heater and termination switch test “good” then the defrost board needs to be replaced. Defrost heater is good if it has continuity. Defrost termination switch is good if it has continuity when cooled below 40 degrees. U-FIX-IT will test these items free of charge if you remove them and take them (along with a cup of ice) to your nearest U-FIX-IT Appliance Parts store.
Replacing all three components will eliminate the need to test. Most service technicians will replace all three items when one of them fail.
